Freeney said Thursday that he hoped to “test” his torn ankle ligament in Friday’s practice, but it didn’t happen. He’ll play on passing downs at best against New Orleans Saints. Meanwhile, CB Jerraud Powers (questionable, foot) was limited in the workout. Reggie Wayne (knee) was limited, but SI.com’s Peter King reports he’s in no apparent danger of missing the Super Bowl.

Elsewhere around the NFL:

Baltimore: Baltimore Ravens FS Ed Reed revealed on the NFL Network Friday that the nerve impingement in his neck and shoulder has gotten worse. Reed also played through ankle, groin and most notably hip injuries during the ’09 season. He indicated that the nerve issue caused the latter most injury. Reed called himself “50:50″ to continue to his playing career early last month. The chances of Reed returning now appear to be decreasing, considering it appears that he is laying the ground work for retirement.

Chicago: Bears promoted DL coach Rod Marinelli to defensive coordinator. Marinelli, who was a defensive line coach in Tampa before his head coaching stint in Detroit and eventual move to Chicago Bears, will call defensive plays for the first time in his career. The Bears decided to stay in-house after whiffing on Perry Fewell, who was their No. 1 target entering the offseason. Marinelli knows the Bears’ Tampa-2 scheme as well as anyone, so he’s a natural fit despite his inexperience from a play-calling standpoint.

Chicago: Devin Hester revealed Thursday that he played through a left shoulder injury in addition to his ankle and calf ailments during the 2009 season. “I really couldn’t use my left shoulder,” said Hester. He said he played through the injury at “75 to 80 percent.” Hester won’t need surgery, but he’s still rehabbing it to build strength. The lower leg injuries also affected his ability to push off, sapping him of his quickness. The team could opt to curtail the smallish Hester’s offensive snaps since he couldn’t hold up to the pounding of two full-time roles.

New York: Giants RB Brandon Jacobs revealed Friday that he injured his knee in the Giants’ 2009 opener and played through it for the entire year. This likely explains the 27-year-old’s severe decline in production and perhaps his surprisingly low usage after GM Jerry Reese promised last offseason that Jacobs would be the team’s clear featured back.

Cleveland: Suspended Browns WR Donte’ Stallworth is due a $1 million roster bonus on March 20. He’ll be gone before then. Stallworth would be in line for a $1.5 million salary if he was to stay on the 2010 roster into Week 1, but he’s not a good enough player and brings too much bad P.R. to keep around. Stallworth figures to receive no more than the NFL minimum when he hits the open market.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that Colts RE Dwight Freeney has a torn ligament in his injured right ankle. The injury “will make it difficult for him to play” in Super Bowl XLIV, according to Schefter. This confirms a Profootballtalk report that Freeney’s injury is more serious than the team has let on. Missing Freeney, even if it’s for just a few less snaps than usual, would be detrimental to Indy’s Super Bowl chances. Freeney, however, is widely known for his high threshold of pain.

Elsewhere around the NFL:

Philadelphia: Sources tell ESPN’s Len Pasquarelli that the Bills will indeed consider Michael Vick for their starting quarterback job. This confirms beat writer Allen Wilson’s speculation earlier this week. New coach Chan Gailey likes mobile quarterbacks and the Bills can’t enter 2010 with Trent Edwards as their starter. The Buffalo Bills would likely only have to give up a conditional sixth- or seventh-round pick to land Vick.

Philadelphia: A high-ranking Eagles official told ESPN.com that “the odds are pretty good [that] [Donovan McNabb] isn’t going anywhere.” We tend to agree, but that doesn’t mean the Eagles aren’t listening to offers. If someone blows them away with a solid veteran on defense and a first-round pick, they’d be hard-pressed to reject a trade. The Philadelphia Eagles front office will deny they are shopping McNabb for many reasons, including their quarterback’s fragile ego. Kevin Kolb continues to wait patiently for his era to begin.

Minnesota: Vikings LT Bryant McKinnie has been dismissed from the NFC Pro Bowl squad after going AWOL late in the week. McKinnie has shown up for only one meeting and even missed the team picture.

Carolina: Julius Peppers said he “doesn’t have a preference” about where he plays next season. “I’m just trying to get on a team right now,” Peppers said. “I just want to get a contract.” Peppers’ fate for 2010 is still very much up in the air. The Carolina Panthers could pay an absurd $20.1 million to put the franchise tag on Peppers again, do a long-term deal or let him walk without any compensation. Just about every team in the league would jump at the opportunity to sign Peppers.

New England: Pro Bowl LG Logan Mankins, who is set to become a restricted free agent, isn’t concerned about his contract situation. Mankins wants an extension, but appears to be resigned to his fate. As a RFA, the New England Patriots will hold all the cards on the excellent run blocker and can bring him back on a one-year deal worth around $3M.

2010 NFL Draft: Michigan DE Brandon Graham was named MVP of the Senior Bowl Saturday.
Graham dominated practices all week, and he was the most disruptive player in the game Saturday as well. He finished with two sacks and a forced fumble. Graham is a tad short at 6’1, but he’s drawn comparisons to fellow Michigan product LaMarr Woodley as a pass rusher.

It’s a little surprising because Freeney has been playing hurt for awhile now and the Colts never seemed too concerned about this injury. Freeney, who is currently No. 4 in the NFL with 9 1/2 sacks, will be missed when the Colts try to slow down Houston’s high powered offense on Sunday.

Elsewhere around the NFL:

Pittsburg: Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (concussion) is out for Sunday night’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. FOX’s Jay Glazer reported that Big Ben was suffering from exercise-induced headaches and the team decided to hold him out. Dennis Dixon, a 2008 fifth-round pick out of Oregon, will get the start because normal No. 2 QB Charlie Batch (wrist) is also out.

Pittsburg: RB Willie Parker is listed as probable for week 12 with a hip injury. He’s nothing more than Rashard Mendenhall’s backup at this point.

New Orleans: Saints WR Lance Moore sat out New Orleans Saints practice Friday and is likely to miss his fourth straight game this weekend.

Minnesota: Vikings WR Bernard Berrian was back at full practice for the Vikings on Friday. Berrian is listed as probable with a hamstring injury, but he should start against the Bears this weekend.

Atlanta: Falcons RB Michael Turner (ankle) is expected to play Sunday, sources tell NFL.com’s Steve Wyche. Wyche is a reliable source as he used to cover the Atlanta Falcons for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Turner will still test his ankle sprain in warmups, but Wyche says there were enough positive signs in practice that the Falcons consider him probable to play.

Indianapolis: Dwight Freeney (abdomen) did not travel to Houston and will not play against the Texans.

Carolina: Panthers WR Steve Smith was added to the injury report Saturday as “questionable” due to a rib injury. This is the first we’ve heard of any problems with Smith and anytime a player is added to the injury report on Saturday it’s a concern.

New England: Patriots RB Sammy Morris was limited in Patriots practice Friday. He’ll be a game-time decision for Monday night against the Saints with a knee injury. With as well as Laurence Maroney is running the ball these days, Morris is nothing more than a handcuff at this point.
