The Raiders and Vikings are “discussing the availability” of Sage Rosenfels, according to Mike Lombardi of the National Football Post. A third-stringer in Minnesota, Rosenfels would be a significant upgrade in Oakland over JaMarcus Russell and Bruce Gradkowski.
Ravens Sign Derrick Mason
March 11th, 2010
Nathan Nau The Baltimore Ravens have signed WR Derrick Mason to a two-year, $8 million contract, including $3.5 million in the first year. Astutely, GM Ozzie Newsome didn’t settle after acquiring Anquan Boldin. Mason is 36 now, but remains a highly effective possession threat, has missed just one game since 2002, and upped both his YPC average (13.0 to 14.1) and TDs (5 to 7) last season, indicating his body isn’t letting him down yet. While his numbers are likely to drop with Boldin as the Ravens’ new clear-cut No. 1 wideout, Mason’s return is exceptional news for Baltimore’s offense.

He’s s expected to receive 8-12 touches per game behind unquestioned starter Jamaal Charles, and will likely be used in a short-yardage role similar to the LenDale White-Chris Johnson situation in 2008.

Vick will be an Eagle Longer than Originally Thought
February 18th, 2010
Nathan Nau NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora reports that the Eagles may hold off until the preseason to trade Michael Vick. While this theoretically makes sense because teams would get more time to evaluate Vick after watching him in exhibition games, it would also cost the Philadelphia Eagles. Vick is due a $1.5M roster bonus on March [...]

February 6th, 2010
Nathan Nau Colts RE Dwight Freeney (ankle) did not practice on Friday and is listed as questionable for Super Bowl XLIV. Freeney said Thursday that he hoped to “test” his torn ankle ligament in Friday’s practice, but it didn’t happen. He’ll play on passing downs at best against New Orleans Saints. Meanwhile, CB Jerraud Powers (questionable, foot) [...]

Nathan Nau The Saints plan to reward QB Drew Brees with a contract extension this offseason, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Saints considered an extension last offseason, on the heels of Brees’ second-place finish in the MVP race. After the second straight MVP caliber season in addition to a Super Bowl appearance, the New Orleans Saints are [...]

January 27th, 2010
Nathan Nau According to the National Football Post, Ravens S Ed Reed is “definitely expected to play” to return in 2010. Aaron Wilson, who doubles as a Ravens beat writer, says it will take a “major setback” with Reed’s nerve impingement or ligament tears in his hip and groin to force him into retirement. Reed recently indicated [...]
Chan Gailey Emerges as Favorite to Land Bills Job
January 19th, 2010
Nathan Nau FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer reports that ex-Chiefs offensive coordinator Chan Gailey has emerged as the frontrunner for the Bills’ head coaching vacancy. Barring a breakdown, the hire is reportedly expected within the next 24-48 hours. Gailey as a serious NFL head coaching target seems odd considering he was fired from his offensive coordinator post before [...]
