The Tennessee Titans history dates back to when they were the Houston Oilers in the AFL. The Oilers were the first AFL champions winning back-to-back titles in 1960 defeating the San Diego Chargers 24-16 and them again in 196110-3. The Oilers went for a three peat as champions but lost to the then Dallas Texans 20-17 in double overtime. At the time the six quarter contest was the longest game in football history going a record seventy-seven minutes. The Oilers became the first team in football to move in a dome stadium in 1968, the Astrodome.After the merger with the NFL the Oilers began the 1970′s with no playoff appearances until 1978 where they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship game 34-5 and then again losing to the Steelers in the AFC Championship the following year 27-13. Starting in 1987 the Oilers made the playoffs seven straight years winning the AFC Central division twice. Warren Moon, who played with the Oilers from 1984-1993, was the quarterback who guided the Oilers to those playoff runs and was one of the most productive, efficient quarterbacks of his generation. Moon was a nine time Pro Bowl player, 1990 Offensive Player of the Year and has over 49,000 career passing yards with 32,000 of them coming with the Oilers. Moon was elected in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006.

The Houston Oilers became the Tennessee Oilers in 1997, then in 1999 they became the Titans. Since the Titans were born they have won two AFC South division titles in 2000 & 2002, and a Super Bowl XXXIV appearance. The Titans lost to the St. Louis Rams 23-16 in a thrilling Super Bowl game. Quarterback Steve McNair was the face of the Titans franchise it the late 1990′s and 2000′s, McNair was a key part of the Titans organization and lead them to back -to back 13-3 seasons in 1999 & 2000. In 2003, McNair was named Co-MVP with fellow quarterback Peyton Manning. In 1999 & 2000 McNair helped the Titans reached back -to back 13-3 seasons. After two bad seasons in 2004 with a record of 5-11 and in 2005 4-12, the Titans rebounded with a 10-6 record in 2007.

There have been a great group of players who have dawned the Oilers/Titans jersey which include quarterback/kicker George Blanda, running back Earl Campbell, who was the NFL MVP in 1979, five time Pro Bowl selection and three time NFL Offensive Player of the Year award winner, safety Ken Houston, and offensive guard Mike Munchak, all members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

The Tennessee Titans play in a difficult AFC South with the Indianapolis Colts and Jacksonville Jaguars so winning the division will be so easy task to accomplish. The Titans have had wavering success the last few seasons and look to get back to their Super Bowl form.

The New York Jets were at a time known as the New York Titans from 1960-1962 in the American Football League. In 1959, New York was granted with another football team but the Titans could not draw any fans to watch them play and they went bankrupt. David Werblin and four other partners purchased the team and changed the name from the Titans to the Jets. Good fortune became to occur with the jets organization including the move form the Polo grounds where to they played to the new Shea Stadium, Attendance quickly grew also with an opening day of over 45,000 people to watch the Jets in 1963.

The Jets were mediocre during the early to mid 1960′s. It wasn’t until quarterback Joe Namath joined the team in 1965. 1968 was a major turning point, not just for the jets, but for the AFL/NFL war of the 1960′s. Namath made the famous guarantee saying his Jets would defeated the NFL Champions Baltimore Colts. The Jets had their best season to date finishing the regular season with a 11-3 record. The Colts were the overwhelming favorite not just to beat the Jets but to destroy them. Namath would be right guaranteeing victory with a 16-7 defeat over the Colts in Super Bowl III and Namath was named Super Bowls Most Valuable Player This proved that the AFL could match up against the superior NFL. Joe Namath was elected to the Pro Football hall of Fame in 1985 along with team member wide receiver Don Maynard in 1987.

The win over the Colts proved to be the high point of the Jets franchise. During the 1970′s, the Jets were a sub .500 team six times while never making the playoffs. The 1980′s were a vast improvement from the 1970′s making the playoffs four times and reached the AFC Championship game in 1982, but lost to the Miami Dolphins 14-0. In the 1990′s the jets only made the playoffs twice and ended the decade with a 1998 AFC Championship loss to the Denver Broncos 23-10.

Since 2000 the Jets have had their best decade since the 1980′s with four playoff appearances and winning the AFC East division in 2002. The New England patriots have dominated the AFC East since 2000 making it very difficult for any other team like the Jets to break out. The New York Jets have new life with the acquisition of all-time great quarterback Bret Favre leading the way. Jets fans hope Favre can pull off a great season and another Super Bowl victory for the J-E-T-S JETS JETS JETS!!!

The Jacksonville Jaguars had their first season in 1995 but long before the opening season a campaign to bring a NFL franchise took place. Tom Petway was a major influence on getting the 30^th franchise to Jacksonville which started all the way back in 1989. Jacksonville was one of eleven cities to be home to the next NFL team but was considered a long shot for the to receive that coveted team. Touchdown Jacksonville! was a partnership that played a serious role in getting the team. Sixty million dollars was given to renovate the Gator Bowl where Jacksonville could play there games until a new stadium was built. After back and forth talks about the renovations and where the money would come from to do so, in 1993 the franchise was award to Jacksonville making them the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars played there first game at Canton, Ohio, home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, against another NFL expansion team the Carolina Panthers.The first Jaguar season produced a 4-12 record besting the previous record of 3-13 for a expansion franchise in its first season. With free agents and the expansion drafts allowed the Jaguars to become a better football team more quickly then in previous years. Jacksonville played in two AFC Championship games, in 1996 losing to the New England Patriots, and 1999 losing to the Tennessee Titans. Despite the lost in the AFC Championship game in 1996, the season was a success because they beat the top seeded Denver Broncos who had a league best 13-3 record. Their best season was a record of 14-2 in 1999 winning the AFC Central, now called the AFC South. The Jaguars worst season came in their first. Winning the division twice in 1998&1999 gave the Jaguars legitimacy among fellow AFC teams that they have to be taken seriously.

There have been a few good players for the Jaguars in the very brief history including quarterback Mark Brunell. Brunell was a three time Pro Bowl selection and was the teams first quarterback in their inaugural season. Brunell was an efficient quarterback who threw for a good percentage but also was a very good runner scrambling away from defenders. In the Jaguars first four seasons they made the playoffs three times making them the first NFL franchise to accomplish that. Also wide receiver Jimmy Smith and Mark Brunell would frequently make connections in the end zone and made of the more formidable tandems in the league.

With perennial power in the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC South, the Jaguars have a difficult task overtaking the Colts. Not making the playoffs for five consecutive years from 2000-2004, the Jaguars are looking to rebound and become contenders once again as they were in the first few years in the league. The AFC is a difficult league to come out of, young talented players such as quarterback David Garrard, full back Fred Taylor, and running back Maurice Jones-Drew have a terrific upside and should only improve threatening other AFC opponents for supremacy. The Jacksonville Jaguars have accomplished many things but the Super Bowl championship still is something left for them to grab.

The Miami Dolphins are another relatively young franchise in comparison with the others in the NFL but have compiled a successful history in their short life. In 1967 the Dolphins were born and quickly reached the pinnacle of success in six seasons going undefeated in 1972. With a 17-0 record, the Dolphins were the last team to go undefeated in the NFL by defeating the Washington Redskins 14-7 in Super Bowl VII. At the time there were only fourteen regular season games compared to sixteen currently. The last team who came close to the mark was the 2007 New England Patriots going 16-0 in the regular season and 18-1 overall losing in Super Bowl XLII to the New York Giants 17-14in the most watched Super Bowl of all-time. The great fan support of the franchise set the attendance record with over 74,000 season ticket holders in 1973.The players who helped reach that perfect season were quarterback Bob Griese, running back Larry Csonka, and guard Larry Little. Coach Don Shula also played a major role in the teams success leading his team to three straight AFC Championship games in 1971, 1972, and 1973 with wins in Super Bowls VII & VIII. From 1970-1974 Don Shula compiled a record of 65-15-1 which was the beginnings of him reaching the all-time wins mark for an NFL coach at 324 in 1993. Since 1970 the Dolphins have won 11 AFC east Division titles and five AFC Championships but the last time was in 1984.

Quarterback Dan Marino was drafted in 1983 and is one the greatest quarterbacks of all-time setting numerous passing records. Dan Marino only reached the Super Bowl once in his illustrious career in 1985 losing to the San Francisco 49ers and their dynasty 38-16. The same year Dan Marino would set the all-time touchdown record in a single season with 48 which has been broken only by two touchdowns ever since, Peyton Manning with 49 in 2004 and Tom Brady with 50 in 2007. At one time Dan Marino held the records for most career touchdowns, passing completions, passing attempts, and passing yards. The Dolphins were constantly in the playoff picture every year with Dan Marino as quarterback but could not get that illusive Super Bowl victory. Football is the ultimate team sport and one man can’t lead a team to a Super Bowl championship. Dan Marino, who played is whole career as a member of the Miami Dolphins, was inducted in the Football Hall of Fame in 2005.

The Miami Dolphins were a league worse 1-15 in the 2007 season and are in the state of renewal and look to improve their status in the NFL once again. Being they are in the same division as the New England Patriots, victories have been minimal is years past with the Patriots dominating. While the successful years of the Shula/Marino seem like they are 100 years ago, the Dolphins can improve on a 1-15 season. All things considering, the Dolphins have reached more success then many of the NFL franchises who have been around longer in the league.

The Denver Broncos are another football team who have experienced the highs and lows of the NFL throughout their history. Founded in 1959 in the AFL, then merged with the NFL in 1970, the Broncos had the worst record of the original eight teams of the AFL with a dismal 39-97-4. The franchise didn’t begin on the right foot. Bow Howsam was struggling financially so he gave his new football used, worn jerseys from the Copper Bowl in Tuscan, AZ with vertical striped socks. The socks were so bad, two years later they were burned in a public ceremony. The support of the team influenced the decision to keep the Broncos in Denver with offers to move the team to Atlanta.It wasn’t until 1973 the Denver Broncos had their first winning season of 7-5-2. This was the turning point for th Broncos franchise which would lead to more successful seasons to come. In 1977 the Broncos won the AFC Division title starting a streak of seven division titles in fourteen years.
Mile High Stadium which held its last season in 2000 was home to record sellouts and was one of the bright spots for the team despite there mediocre success in the early years. Opposing teams found playing at Mile High to be difficult do to the high altitude in Denver.

The 1980′s brought new founded success Bronco fans were not use to. John Elway who was drafted in by the Baltimore Colts in 1983 never played for them but traded to the Broncos. During the 1980′s John Elway would lead the Broncos to three Super Bowls XXI, XXII, and XXIV but losing everyone. John Elway was on the verge of going down in football history as the greatest quarterback never to win the Super Bowl. Nearly ten years after the Broncos last Super Bowl loss they reached football supremacy reaching Super Bowls XXXII, and XXXIII, winning both. Elway ended his Hall of Fame career as the Super Bowl XXXIII Most Valuable Player. Elway lead the Broncos to many fourth quarter comebacks and holds every significant quarterback record for the Broncos. John Elways is famous for “The Drive” against the Cleveland Browns in the 1987 AFC Championship game. The scoring drive was 15 plays covering 98 yards in leading to a overtime field goal for the win.

Following the Elway Era the Broncos have had fleeting success. The Broncos have made the plaoffs but never made it back to the Super Bowl and only one AFC Championship game, only winning one playoff game since Elway’s retirement. The Broncos have been a good team during the 2000′s but have been eliminated by better teams in the AFC including the Indianapolis Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers, teams who eventually won the Super Bowl this decade.

The Denver Broncos have only had one Hall of Fame player to date which is John Elway. While John Elway might have spoiled Bronco fans with his success leading the team to many victories, the Broncos have a optimistic view of their future.
