Former Los Angeles Chargers, the San Diego Chargers were established in 1959, a relatively young team in comparison which another NFL franchises. Originally apart of the American Football Conference, the Chargers weren’t widely accepted in the Los Angeles community. In 1961 the franchise was moved to San Diego with more of a fan fair then in L.A. The AFL had the reputation of high scoring, fast pace offense which pleased the crowds and the Chargers weren’t an exception to this rule.Over the course of the San Diego Chargers history they have experience ups and downs, highs and lows, failures and success. In the early years they were winners of 5 of the first 6 division titles in the AFL winning the championship in 1963, 51-10 over Boston. The 1970s didn’t have nearly the success of the 1960s did. A drought in the 70s didn’t produce a championship of any kind until 1979. The Chargers return to their 1960s glory day with a Super Bowl birth against the San Francisco 49ers XXIX. It was a bitter sweet for the Charger, the 49ers blew the game wide open and the Chargers never recovered losing 49-26. The Chargers have not returned to the Super Bowl since then.
The San Diego Chargers, while a brief history have produced a number of Hall of fame players who include Kellen Winslow, Ron Mix, Lance Alworth, Dan Fouts, Sid Gillman, Charlie Joiner and future Hall of Fame running back LaDainian Tomlinson. Known as “LT” Tomlinson has been one of the most productive running backs of the 5 year winning the leagues Most Valuable Player Award in the 2006 season. In the very same season he set the all-time touchdown record by a running back with 31.
The future of the San Diego Chargers has the potential to be a successful next couple of years. Despite the loss of linebacker Shawn Merriman for the season, the Chargers have enough weapons to make up for the great loss to their defense with a potent offense. The AFC has been the top conference in the NFL the last few seasons and making their way to the Super Bowl will be no less then very difficult. With Phillip Rivers as the quarterback, Antonio Gates as the tight end, and LaDainian Tomlinson in the back field, the Chargers always have a chance to win a football game.
The Chargers play in the AFC West division, a mediocre division which includes the Oakland Raiders and the Kansas City Chiefs, two teams on the opposite ends of success currently. Returning to the glory days of the 1960s and duplicating that success, the San Diego Chargers are one of the better teams in the league and have the opportunity to create their own piece of great history.
