Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan called out Trent Edwards on Friday, calling him “no Carson Palmer.” Ryan continued to elaborate on his comments by saying, “This guy (Edwards) always seems to have a lot to say, so I’m going to say the same thing. Let’s get it on, see what he’s all about this week.” This certainly an interesting turn of events as Ryan’s defense is putrid, ranking last in yards allowed and 29th in passing defense in the NFL. In addition, Ryan was also the defensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders from 2004-2008. Despite having a number of talented players, Ryan was never able to build a top-ten defense in Oakland.
It’s certainly baffling that Ryan would provide bulletin board material for an offense that could break out at any moment. Look for the Bills big names on offense, including Lee Evans, Terrell Owens, Fred Jackson and Marshawn Lynch, to break out Sunday and punish the Browns.
Elsewhere around the NFL
New York: Giants QB Eli Manning (foot) participated in the Giants’ regular Saturday morning walkthrough. Manning will still be a game-time decision, but the Giants must decide to promote QB Rhett Bomar off the practice squad by 4 p.m. ET today. We will have a better idea if Manning will play after the decision is made whether or not to promote Bomar.
Philadelphia: Word out of Philadelphia is the Eagles would like to extend the contract of head coach Andy Reid’s before it is up after the 2010 season. Team president Joe Banner, in an interview with Comcast Network, says, “We view him as being in the top couple of coaches in the league…we feel lucky to have him. So, at whatever point, I’m sure that that issue will be resolved.” Extending Reid is a no-brainer as he will be going for his 100th win as the Eagles’ coach on Sunday against Tampa Bay.
Indy: Colts RB Joseph Addai practiced fully on Friday, but is listed as questionable for Week 5 with a hand injury. Addai has a tough week 5 matchup with Tennessee, but keep an eye on rookie RB Donald Brown. If Brown is able to have success against Tennessee, he could permanently take carries away from Addai.
Pittsburg: Steelers SS Troy Polamalu (knee) is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game in Detroit. Even though Polamalu has practiced on a limited basis every day this week, the Steelers would be wise to sit him this week to ensure that his knee is fully healed. The Steelers defense clearly misses their start safety.
Atlanta: Falcons RB Michael Turner has struggled against the 3-4 defenses this season, rushing for just 65 yards against Miami and 56 yards in New England. In addition, Turner will face an upstart San Francisco defense this weekend that also runs a 3-4 scheme. Look for the Falcons to try to use Turner differently this week, with several screen passes and check-downs being in the game plan.
