Drew Brees completed 35-of-49 passes for 419 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in a Week 13 come-from-behind victory against the Washington Redskins. Brees threw for 249 second-half yards, including a game-tying bomb to Robert Meachem with under a minute remaining in regulation after Shaun Suisham’s missed chip shot kept the door open for a comeback. After erasing a 27-17 third-quarter deficit to force overtime the Saints recovered a Mark Sellers fumble and marched down field for a game-winning Garrett Hartley kick to clinch the division title and remain unbeaten at 12-0.
Elsewhere around the NFL:
San Diego: Antonio Gates caught eight passes for 167 yards in Sunday’s win over the Browns. This was an especially pathetic performance by the Browns’ secondary. Philip Rivers just chucked the ball up deep for Gates over and over and the tight end came down with it. Gates now has 15 catches and 285 yards in his last two games and gets the Dallas Cowboys next week
Seattle: Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck completed 25-of-34 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns and added four scrambles for 31 yards to lead the Seahawks over the 49ers in Week 13, 20-17. Hasselbeck hit rookie Deon Butler with a 32-yard sideline laser with 20 seconds left to put the Seahawks in position for the game-winning field goal. Though he managed just 5.8 yards per attempt, he was on target throughout the game.
Seattle: Justin Forsett rushed five times for just nine yards and added three receptions for 25 yards and a touchdown against the 49ers in Week 13. Forsett lost some explosiveness with the late-week quadriceps strain, which may have limited his touches behind Julius Jones
Kansas City: Coach Todd Haley confirmed after Sunday’s loss to Denver that Matt Cassel will remain the Kansas City Chiefs’ starting quarterback in Week 14. “It was going to be very difficult for us to…get in the game and it was a chance to get Brodie some snaps,” Haley explained when asked why Cassel was benched for Brodie Croyle in the third quarter. Cassel was picked twice and had just 84 yards on 29 attempts against Denver, but was also the victim of countless drops. Things will not get easier as Cassel will face a tough Buffalo defense in week 14.
Philadelphia: DeSean Jackson (concussion) is likely to return next week, a team source tells Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer.
Cleveland: Brady Quinn completed 25-of-45 passes for 271 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday’s loss to the Chargers. Quinn did kill the team with a bad fumble late in the first half. But outside of that, he was pretty impressive. He was still a “dump off” kind of passer, completing 16 passes for backs and tight ends, but he showed good poise and patience..
