New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick came to the defense of RB Laurence Maroney when asked if he got frustrated at times by the talented back. “I really don’t have a lot of problems with Laurence,” said Belichick. “What I’d like to see is for us to open bigger holes to create some space for these guys.” With Sammy Morris still hurting, expect Maroney to continue the load in week 9 after the bye.
Elsewhere from around the NFL:
Washington: Adam Schefter is reporting that Chris Cooley (fractured ankle) may play again in four weeks. Cooley confirmed via his Twitter account that he had three pins inserted and hopes to be back in four weeks. Cooley is worth holding onto in most fantasy leagues if you can spare the roster spot.
Philadelphia: Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid is not ruling out Brian Westbrook (concussion) for this week’s game against the Giants. Reid was noncommittal on Westbrook’s status, saying that he’s counting on Westbrook being there but will have to see how the concussion tests go. According to beat writer Jeff McLane, team doctors don’t appear to be as enthusiastic about Westbrook playing this Sunday.
Kansas City: Speaking at his weekly press conference Tuesday, Kansas City Chiefs coach Todd Haley suggested that RB Jamaal Charles has earned a larger role going forward. Haley said that Charles is “starting to get it” and that the second-year back is “growing on him.” With Larry Johnson’s Kansas City future up in the air, Charles appears to be a solid late season addition to a fantasy roster.
Kansas City: According to the website RealGM.com, a “team source” is saying that the Kansas City Chiefs will sever ties with Larry Johnson in the very near future. This website has not credibility, but the notion of Johnson being released would not be a big surprise.
Indianapolis: Colts GM Bill Polian has expressed no concern over Reggie Wayne’s groin injury. The team may play it cautiously with Wayne’s practice workload, but Polian said the No. 1 receiver is “fine.” He’ll likely be listed as “probable” on the injury report before starting against San Fran.
