Jamal Lewis’ Career Likely Over

jamal-lewisThe Browns have placed RB Jamal Lewis on injured reserve with “post-concussion symptoms,” ending his season. Lewis, who plans to retire, ends his last season with career lows in total yards (588), touchdowns (0), catches (8), and rushing yards per game (55.6). His 3.5 YPC average was the second lowest of his 10-year career. We’ve heard some observers call Lewis a possible and even probable Hall of Famer, but that’s unlikely. While Lewis’ 2003 season was one of the most dominant by a running back all-time, he only made one Pro Bowl and didn’t have enough sustained success.

Elsewhere around the NFL:

Washington: Even though he has been medically cleared to return from his concussion, RB Clinton Portis said in a radio interview that he might be done for the year. “I have to do what’s safe and what’s best,” Portis said. “If I’m cleared and can get back out there for the last few games, I’m definitely going to try. If I can’t, I’ll go into the offseason healthy and starting off fresh next year.” Portis looked as if he lost a step this year, perhaps this will help him get his legs back for 2010.

Seattle: According to Seattle Seahawks coach Jim Mora, RB Julius Jones’ status won’t be known until later in the week. He has been dealing with a ribs and lung injury for the last 2 weeks. If Jones can’t go this weekend, Justin Forsett will be a solid start against the 49ers.

Detroit: QB Matthew Stafford practiced on Wednesday. He has been dealing with a dislocated left shoulder. It looks like he will start Sunday at Cincinnati.

Cincinnati: Cincinnati Bengals RB Cedric Benson (hip) returned to a full practice on Wednesday. Benson appears to be on track for a full practice week and to get a “probable” listing on Friday. Benson is expected to be 100 percent and receive the majority of the carries on Sunday.

Cincinnati: Bengals RB Bernard Scott (turf toe) was still on crutches and in a walking boot Wednesday. The Bengals’ own twitter account says Scott’s status “does not look good for Sunday.” This could solve coach Marvin Lewis’ “good problem” of having four solid running backs looking to be active for Sunday’s game against the Lions.

Arizona: Arizona Cardinals QB Kurt Warner (concussion) returned a “full” practice Wednesday, although he split first-team snaps with Matt Leinart. Despite the split in reps, Warner’s return indicates that he was cleared after an early-week visit to an eye doctor. Warner says he’s “getting better,” and that the “fogginess” in his eyes has dissipated
