The Bucs have informed first year head coach Raheem Morris that he will be retained in 2010. Morris’ team finished 3-13, which was good for dead last in the weak NFC South. The blame can partially be placed on a rookie QB, defensive playcalling turnover and the fact that the Bucs where young at several key positions. Bucs fans certainly have to be scratching there heads over the firing of Jon Gruden as Morris’s team ranked 28th in total offense and 27th. GM Mark Dominik will have to make much better personnel decisions this offseason for the Buccaneers to be competitive in 2010.
Elsewhere around the NFL:
New York: The Giants and Bears are reportedly competing for the services of recently fired Bills interim head coach Perry Fewell as defensive coordinator. NFL.com’s Jason LaCanfora reported that Fewell was “very likely” to lead the Bears defense, but the former Bills coordinator is reportedly scheduled to interview with the New York Giants Thursday. The Giants have been tight-lipped about their search for a new coordinator and have already been rumored to be looking for an external candidate for the position.
Pittsburg: According to Ken Laird of ESPN 1250 in Pittsburgh, Pittsburg Steelers offensive coordinator Bruce Arians is expected to be fired “in the near future.” NFL.com’s Jason LaCanfora calls the report “premature.” Arians came under heavy criticism in Pittsburgh for bucking the traditional ground game to go with a pass-heavy offense, often with questionable playcalling. If fired, Arians would be scapegoated for the defense’s season-long troubles after he led the offense to one of the most productive seasons in franchise history.
Cincinnati: Cincinnati Bengals coach Marvin Lewis reiterated that Chad Ochocinco’s knee is fine and that he’s only suffering from a bruised ego. “He’s healthy as I think he’s Twittered all over America,” said Lewis. Ochocinco is practicing with the knee bruise Tuesday, so he should be fine for his rematch with Revis Island on Saturday.
New Orleans: Saints placed LE Charles Grant on injured reserve with a torn triceps muscle, ending his season. Sean Payton said nothing of the injury in his Monday news conference, but it’s believed to have occurred in the second quarter of Week 17. The loss of Gant on defense is a big blow to the New Orleans Saints postseason march.
Houston: The Associated Press has voted Texans SLB Brian Cushing the Defensive Rookie of the Year.
He won in a landslide, getting 39 votes to Jairus Byrd’s six, Clay Matthews’ three, and Brian Orakpo’s two. Cushing recorded 134 tackles this season, which ranked fifth in the NFL.
Miami: Coach Tony Sparano wouldn’t fully commit Monday to Chad Henne as the Dolphins’ starting quarterback for 2010. “I haven’t really discussed it yet,” Sparano said. “I haven’t really looked at the whole body of work.” Sparano did admit he was “really pleased with what Chad did” in his 13 starts.

Just when it seemed that Brandon Marshall turned the corner and was establishing himself as one of the top wide receivers in the league, Marshall and Denver Head Coach Josh are at odds over Marshall announcing to the media that he will not play on Sunday.
Saints RB Pierre Thomas (ribs) has been ruled out for Week 17. Reggie Bush will likely start against the Panthers, though Mike Bell is a better bet for carries and touchdowns.
Broncos WR Brandon Marshall suffered a potentially severe pull or strain of his hamstring in Wednesday’s practice, according to CBS 4 Denver. The contract-year wideout came up limping at the end of a drill and was holding his right leg as the
According to Profootballtalk.com, the Giants have “no desire” to release or trade DE Osi Umenyiora after this season. The franchise reportedly believes Umenyiora’s comments following Sunday’s loss, which indicated he doesn’t expect to be back in New York next year, are simply Umenyiora latest attempt to get a new contract and/or he has been frustrated by the teams play. After missing all of 2008 due to knee surgery, Umenyiora’s rush numbers are way down and he’s been exposed by the run. Even if he returns to the
The Rams have placed QB Marc Bulger (fractured shinbone) on injured reserve, ending his season. This move was more of a formality as Bulger’s season was over several weeks ago. Bulger, 32, is scheduled to make $8.5 million next season and could be cut in the offseason in favor of a younger replacement. The
Titans RB Chris Johnson rushed 21 times for 142 yards with one touchdown and added three catches for 37 yards in Friday night’s loss to the Chargers. Johnson broke 100 rushing yards for the 10th straight game and is now 128 yards away from 2,000 rushing yards on the season. The Titans left him in despite trailing 42-10 and Johnson broke off a 30-yard touchdown run that was lightly contested by the
The Colts have placed WR Anthony Gonzalez (knee) on injured reserve, ending his season. Gonzalez was expected to be a game-time decision for this week’s game against the Jets, so it appears that he had a setback during practice. Pierre Garcon is now a full-time starter in
The
Coach Rex Ryan announced Wednesday that Kellen Clemens will be the Jets’ starting quarterback in Week 14. Mark Sanchez’s PCL sprain will cost him at least one game. The Bucs usually present a favorable matchup for passers, but Clemens is always a good bet to struggle.
Steelers S Troy Polamalu (knee) said Tuesday that there is still no timetable for his return and it’s possible that he’ll miss the rest of the season. Polamalu admitted that he won’t play Thursday against the Browns. The 10 days off before the next game will give him a better chance to return in Week 15, but he’s yet to be cleared for practice much less game action. Polamalu should only attempt a return if the
Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt assured reporters Monday that Kurt Warner’s hip injury “probably won’t be an issue” going forward. The injury, which is not to the hip Warner had surgically repaired in the offseason, is being called a “hip pointer.” Warner, 38, was reportedly seen “moving around well” on Monday. Expect these type of injuries throughout the rest of his career due to his age.
