The New York Giants are one of the oldest NFL teams in the league beginning their history in 1925. The Giants are one of the more successful franchises in the NFL and starting winning right from the start. In only their third season the Giants won the NFL Championship allowing only twenty points for their opponents in the thirteen game season. Steve Owen, who lead the team in that great defense in 1927, became the Giants head coach in 1930 and would remain their coach for the next twenty-three season accumulating a record of 153-108-17 with eight Eastern Division titles and two NFL Championships in 1934 & 1938.
As the decades passed, the Giants still remained NFL title contenders in the 1950′s and 1960′s with Allie Sherman as head coach. Adding another championship to the Giants credit in 1956 and six more Eastern Division titles from 1956-1963. As it does in teams sports, a drought hit the Giants from 1964-1985 where the Giants had very little success compared to their previous history.
It wasn’t until coach Bill Parcells took over and the Giants were winners again. Not only did Parcells help in the Giants win but all-time great linebacker Lawrence Taylor and quarterback Phil Simms played huge roles in their success. Parcells won Super Bowl XXI & XXV. Lawrence Taylor was one of the most feared players in NFL history who played his entire career with the New York Giants. Taylor was a ten time Pro Bowl selection and named to the NFL All Decades team of the 1980′s. Taylor was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999 and has his number fifty-six retired by the Giants. Taylor had a major impact on the game and is considered the bench mark for all lineman.
The Giants would once again reach two more Super Bowls this decade with the first being a very unsuccessful one losing to the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV 34-7. The second trip in Super Bowl XLII was very different as the Giants defeated the heavily favored New England Patriots 17-14 in the most watched game in Super Bowl history with an estimated audience of nearly 100 million. It was one of the biggest upsets in Super Bowl history with the Patriots on the verge of perfection with a unblemished 18-0 record. he Patriots set the all-time scoring record in a season with 589 points. Quarterback Eli Manning for the Giants won his own Super Bowl just a season after his brother Peyton Manning, the quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts, won his.
The New York Giants play in the NFC East which include the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins, and Philadelphia Eagles. The NFC East in considered by most the toughest division in the NFL. The Giants are one of the favorites to win the division but repeating as Super Bowl Championships is no easy task. Their Super Bowl XLII victory was not foreseen by many so repeating as champions is not expected also by many.
